根據國民健康署癌症登記報告顯示，台灣平均每年新診斷的急性淋巴性白血病患者約有 230名，常見於 3-5 歲兒童，但成人比例逐年增加。中華民國血液暨骨髓移植學會理事長姚明醫師表示，急性淋巴性白血病兒童的治癒率高達八成以上，但成人因骨髓造血細胞再生能力不如兒童，無法承受高劑量化療，預後不佳，存活率僅有四成二。

一名罹患急性淋巴性白血病的呂先生，因化療進出醫院數十次，同時暴瘦20公斤，在因病辭去工作後，加上沒有醫療保險，家中經濟狀況的確產生了沉重的負擔。所幸，他接受了免疫療法「雙特異抗體」治療，在健保署核准納入健保給付後，不僅一年省下了百萬的醫療費，體內癌細胞更獲得控制緩解，之後接受了骨髓移植，重獲新生。
